When life gives me eclipses, I make…classic Disney Movie references.
I don't know about y'all, but these past couple of weeks have been a doozy.
Can I get a 'heaven yea!' from anyone feeling like they've been drowning?
'Heaven yea!'
'Alright now.'
Thank you. Nice to know I'm not alone in this.
So yeah, when we tell our stories to 'eff off,' in the most loving way, we are doing one of the bravest things a human can do. We are untethering ourselves from just about all that we consider to be true. Essentially committing ego-suicide. This is no easy feat for the gods, let alone mere mortals carved in the image of the most delicious pie in the sky.
And when we are floating in that untethered space, we are vulnerable. We can become more sensitive to the stories around us. More susceptible to absorbing them as our own and feeling their weight in our bones. Familial stories. Nationalist stories. Global stories. The list grows more nuanced and opaque the further you go, until you feel like you are in a blender, under water, on a planet that doesn't agree with the current laws of physics.
It's a lot.
This is where classic Disney Movies come in, and just like every hero/heroine in them, can save the day.
I recently re-watched Peter Pan, and was stunned at just how significant the symbolism in that movie is. The racism against Native Peoples is also stunning, but that is a whole other newsletter. What has lingered in my imagination most notably though was the song that is playing as the Darling children take their leap of faith out of their bedroom window, with Tinker Bell in tow, and follow Peter into the night sky as they all fly out of London and towards Neverland.
In case you have forgotten them, here are the opening lyrics:
But Peter, how do we get to Neverland?
Fly of course!
Fly?
It's easy! All you have to do is to, is to, is to- huh that's funny!
What's the matter? Don't you know?
Oh, sure, it's, it's just that I never thought about it before. Say, that's it! You think of a wonderful thought!
Any happy little thought?
Uh-huh.
Like toys at Christmas? Sleigh bells? Snow?
Yep! Watch me now, here I go! It's easier than pie!
He can fly!
Now, you try.
And that, my friends, is my invitation to you. The more I learn, the more I realize I have no idea what is going on. Up from down. Left from right. It's all beginning to give me quite the fright!
But one thing I do feel is that these times we're in are crazy and show no signs of slowing down.
So spark up your happiest of thoughts, take a big breath in, and jump. Especially when you fear you may drown. You may just surprise yourself, as you open your eyes and see the ocean far beneath you.
You can fly.
As always
